Straw Harrow

Claydon Straw Harrow

The Claydon Straw Harrow creates a micro tilth in the top 30mm of soil, using the retained moisture for fast, even weed germination. It rakes out and destroys weeds at the cotyledon and one‐leaf stage, removing a food source for slugs. Straw Harrows break up slug nests and desiccate their eggs by mixing up and exposing damp chaff and straw to sunlight.

The robust Claydon Straw Harrow has been designed for fast action and maximum effect weed germination. At speeds of up to 25km/h, they shatter straw and break it up for faster decomposition. They can be used before or after cultivations to level soil and create a fine tilth.

Straw Harrow FAQs

Apart from harrowing straw, it creates a micro tilth in the top 30mm of soil which helps preserve moisture for a fast, even germination of weeds.

It rakes out and uproots weeds at the cotyledon and one-leaf stage.  It also creates the perfect micro tilth to encourage more weeds to germinate which can then be raked out again to reduce the weed seed bank.

It helps reduce slug populations by removing weeds and volunteers which are a food source for slugs.  It also breaks up and destroys slug nests and exposes slug eggs to ultraviolet sunlight which desiccates them.

By travelling at high speed, it shatters straw and trash, breaking it up and spreading it out evenly on the soil’s surface for faster decomposition.

The Claydon Straw Harrow should be operated at speeds of 15 – 25 km/h, depending on field conditions.

Travelling at speed enables this tool to do the jobs it was designed to perform effectively.  The design, quality and build of the Claydon straw harrow make it possible for it to withstand highspeed operation.

To do an effective job of breaking up and distributing crop residues, a straw harrow needs to travel at speed.  Fitting discs compromises the efficacy of the harrow as it will have to travel slower.  It also makes it difficult to turn on the headlands so straw is more likely to be dumped at either end of the field.  Straw heaps are an inviting habitat for slugs and can lead to poor crop establishment.  For maximum speed and flexibility, this tool is fitted with wraparound steel tines.

The minimum horsepower requirement ranges from 60 hp for the 3m mounted machine to 300 hp for the 15m trailed machine.

The wrap-around spring tines are pretty unbreakable!  The heavy-duty tines are fixed so that they pivot and absorb shock loads when working in stony, tough conditions and when turning.  The wrap-around design means there are no pressure points to snap meaning that the tines last for ages.

Yes they can.  The angle of the tines is adjusted hydraulically from the tractor cab, depending on how aggressively you want the harrow to work and how much tilth and straw flow is required.

The tines are available in 14mm and 16mm diameters.

It is a quick and cost-effective tool.  It typically uses just 2 litres of fuel per hectare.

It is a rugged and robust machine with a 150mm high-grade steel box section.   The wing pivot pins are greaseable and bushed to ensure long service life.  It uses heavy-duty tines.  It has been designed to last and withstand fast travel.

The five rows of tines and their spacings make blockages unlikely and the hydraulically adjustable tine angle ensures optimum flow-through.

The range comprises 3m, 7.5m and 9m mounted harrows and 12.5m and 15m trailed machines.
